Are 50 Degree High Temps in September Something New?

Its almost apple picking time!  The cooler temps are a bit early...or are they.

I ran some numbers looking back at all of the September high temps since 1901--all 110 years worth--to check for 50 degree high temperature occurrences.

If you are heading to high school games Friday night, the temps will resemble more mid-October than mid-September.  Frankly, I am ready  for it.

Lots of numbers so here are the highlights of what I found:

Days with temps in the 50s in September by decade:

2001-2010:   12
1991-2000:   15
1981-1990:   16
1971-1980:     9
1961-1970:   15
1951-1960:     8
1941-1950:   13
1931-1940:   23
1921-1930:   27
1911-1920:   32
1901-1910:   17

How many occurrences of consecutive days in the 50s in September?:   45

5 straight days once:         September 24-28, 1928
                                                56, 54, 56, 58, 55

Earliest 50 degree high in September: 
                                       September 10, 1917:  52

Coldest high temp in September:
                                       September 29, 1967:  48

Last time we had temps in the 50s this early:
                                    September 14, 2007:  58
                           September 15, 1996:  59
